March Madness: The good, bad, and ugly (An Ohio perspective)

In high school, I followed March Madness pretty closely. I even used March Madness as a way to research potential colleges to apply to. It sparked my curiosity in Villanova, and I ended up applying there.

With the absence of school, exams and spring break, I’ve had the opportunity to follow college basketball and March Madness more closely this year. The tournament has been nothing short of exciting, especially with the abundance of bracket-busting upsets in the first round. While the tournament is only halfway through, here is just a sampling of my thoughts on it so far:

The good:
For the first time in NCAA history,Ohio is the first state to have four teams in the Sweet Sixteen. There has never been a better time to be an Ohioan and a college basketball fan. Our state is in the spotlight for something other than being a swing state and exotic animals on the loose.

The tournament has also reminded me of how unifying sports can be. I talk with a lot of out-of-state advertising sales reps as part of my job, and being able to talk about sports is a great way to make small talk and build a connection. So while I have found many colleagues are graduates of other Big Ten Schools, we still share pride in our conference

The bad:
From the Ohio perspective, with so many schools within such a close proximity to one another, rivalries feel more intense than ever. Families divided, friends talking smack, and office bets going horribly awry (at least for me).

It also seems schools’ stereotypes are perpetuated more than ever. Ohio State fans think they are better than everyone else? Yep. Lingering thoughts of the UC/Xavier fight, and the Ohio Bobcats are desperately trying to prove they are “more than just a party school”. OU might be putting itself on the map for years to come, or they could just be the tournament’s Cinderella team.

The ugly:
There have been some ugly losses already, and more are sure to come. Regardless of what team you are rooting for, we can only hope for some good games.

Go Buckeyes!

My love affair with grilled cheese

It is no secret that I am obsessed with grilled cheese. When it comes to this simple sandwich, I stand  firmly behind the saying “There’s no such thing as too much of a good thing”. This past week, I decided to try out some updated versions of my favorite sandwich:

Grilled Cheese with Tomato and Pesto

I will be honest, it was hard for me not to eat two or three of these sandwiches in one sitting.  The flavors from the cheese, pesto, and cheese blended together so perfectly.I used an exceptionally juicy tomato for this sandwich, and needless to say, the sandwich was dripping with flavor.

Broccoli and Cheese Soup Grilled Cheese

Initially, I thought this sandwich would turn out a lot better than it did. The blog I found the recipe on said it would taste like broccoli cheddar soup, but I didn’t really agree. For next time, I think it would  be helpful to even out the broccoli : cheese : chicken ratio. Hopefully, it will make it a little more flavorful. I can’t wait to make it again.

Does anyone else have a favorite version of grilled cheese they like to make? Let me know!

Those pesky resolutions

I consider myself to be a highly motivated individual. I always strive to reach my fullest potential. So, it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone when I say that I enjoy making New Year’s resolutions.

This year, however, I was slow on the up-take. I made a slew of goals and wishes for myself on my 22nd birthday, so I really didn’t give too much thought about my resolutions for 2012. One resolution that I did make, was to try a new recipe every week  to expand my culinary horizons and to give myself a new hobby.

Three weeks into 2012, I am 1 for 3 in trying new recipes. I found this recipe for chocolate chip cheesecake bars, and making them was so fun!

I never realized what a great stress reliever baking is. I blasted some music and got down to work. The recipe called for using a mixer, but we don’t have one; needless to say, my arm got quite a work out!

My Tuesday night baking experience reinforced that I need to keep up with my resolution. Also, to keep up with my blogging, I hope to write about each recipe. Can’t wait to decide what to make next!

Small Business Saturday!

Black Friday, Cyber Monday… now Small Business Saturday?

American Express is leading an initiative to encourage shoppers to support local small businesses the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Social media sites such as Facebook and YouTube are helping small businesses to get the word out and get people shopping!

By supporting small businesses, consumers help create jobs and keep local economies going.

These businesses are grocery stores, pharmacies, appliance stores, jewelers, bakeries, and so many more.

Shopping and supporting small businesses has always been part of my life.  My mom started her own dance studio when I was eight years old.  My dad prefers to shop at the local hardware store first before going to Home Depot or Lowes. My aunt always likes to pick out birthday or Christmas gifts, for my siblings and I, that are from stores in her hometown of Hoboken, New Jersey. For our high school graduations, she gave my sister and I hand-crafted glass jewelry boxes. “You will never find anything quite like this, anywhere else,” she told us with pride.

Living in Columbus, I have seen local businesses, such as Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, thrive and gain national recognition right before my eyes.

Small businesses can offer local, unique flavor to your gift giving.  Many items are one-of-a-kind and can reflect the culture or pride of the city you live in.  So while you may live in a different city from family or friends, a gift from a local store can help bridge that distance.

So today, skip the crowds at the mall and opt to explore some local stores right in your backyard. Does anyone have a favorite local business they frequent regularly?

Make November a Thankful Month

I don’t want to sound like a Grinch or a scrooge, but I hate when people begin rolling out Christmas decorations, music, and holiday advertisements on November 1st..  Sometimes, I feel like our society tends to overlook the holiday we are supposed to celebrate in November—Thanksgiving.

In my opinion, Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on how far we have come in the last year and to give thanks for the people and experiences that helped us along the way. We dedicate months to various other holidays, and Thanksgiving should be no exception.

Life throws some pretty fast curve balls, and in times of uncertainty, it’s easy to get swept up in what’s going wrong, and forget about what there is to be thankful for.  It’s all about perspective. If there’s one thing I am grateful for this year, it’s the healthy dose of perspective I’ve gotten these last few months.

Many of you will be traveling home for Thanksgiving. Instead of complaining about heavy traffic or airport security lines, pass the time by thinking about what you are thankful for… it will make the trip a little more manageable.

Get a little creative with people and things you are thankful for. My friend Lauren and I once had a discussion about what celebrities and other famous people we would like to write thank you letters to for having some sort of influence on us. For daily inspiration on things in your life you can give thanks for, I really like ThxThxThx.

So make November a thankful month.

And for those who are taking the time to read this, thank you for being part of my life!

Staying Active

A new study from The Ohio State University suggests the legendary “Freshman 15″ for most college students is a myth.   The study finds students typically gained about three pounds during their freshman year.

I’m not surprised by the findings. I think I actually lost weight my freshman year (thank you, mono). Staying active in college wasn’t hard at all. For starters, I walked EVERYWHERE. Being on a campus as large as Ohio State, it wasn’t uncommon to have a 15 minute walk to class. Visits to the gym were good stress relievers and study breaks. Plus, no one wanted to look flabby for Halloween or Spring Break.

However, I still feel as though I am not as active as I was in college.

I don’t walk as much since I sit at a desk all day. When I come home, I am too tired to drive to the gym multiple times a week, or am busy with other commitments. Weird, since I have no kids to look after, no homework, and no student organization meetings to attend.

Does anyone else feel this way? How does everyone else make sure to stay active in the real world?

Funny Girls

Last week, I saw several people posted a trailer for “Miss Representation” on Facebook. The film explores how the portrayals of women in the media and advertising influence girls to define their success more by their appearance and sexuality, rather than their intelligence or ability to be a leader. It argues the influence the media has on how girls view themselves and how boys view them, might have an effect on the lack of women in leadership positions within our country.

I am excited to watch the screening and to post my thoughts about it. For now, though, this post is dedicated to some of my favorite women  who prove that fame in the TV industry  comes from more than being just a pretty face.

You know the ice breaker when you have to say the one person you would want to have lunch with?  Tina Fey is my person.  I read BossyPants over the summer and one of the most fascinating things she discussed was during her time in Second City,  she struggled to prove that women can be funny in a lead role. However, Fey proved naysayers wrong with her sharp wit,  sarcasm, and the gifted ability to laugh at herself. From Mean Girls, to 30 Rock, and Saturday Night Live, Tina Fey is a role model for funny girls everywhere. (Fun Fact About Me: it is a dream of mine to host  an episode of SNL one day.)

Amy Poehler

Another SNL alum. I love Amy in her role as Leslie Knope in Parks and Recreation. Together, Poehler and Fey speak out a lot about women in comedy, which is why I like them even more.

Zooey Deschanel

I am not the biggest fan of her, because she seems to play the same character in all her movies. However, I love her new show, The New Girl. Zooey proves that geeky and slightly awkward works, and if that’s who you are…then work it.

Olivia Munn

Disclaimer: I’ve never seen her act, but when I read her Dos and Don’ts in Glamour and a profile on her in the October issue of Cosmo, I  really liked what she had to say. I found it insightful and inspiring.  When I looked up more information about her, I was interested in learning how she was accused of being hired as a correspondent for The Daily Show based on her looks. Perhaps Munn’s experience could be a result of the media influence this documentary explores.

Miss Representation airs on Thursday, October 20th at 9 p.m. on the Oprah Winfrey Network. Will you be tuning in?
